  • computer velocity prediction programs
  • exceptional performance

  •   Yachts from 70ft upwards are effectively custom products; numbers built rarely justify the costs of making hull and deck moulds and owners prepared to invest the money needed for a vessel of this size understandably want to ensure that the design, construction and specification are to their specific requirements. Warwick Yacht Design have five new projects underway for yachts around 80ft (24 metres) LOA. The common denominator is that all follow a similar design philosophy to that illustrated in the Mystic 55 and 66; composite sandwich construction, self-tacking jib, in-boom furling fully battened mainsail, swept back spreader mast, low level pilot house with upper level dining and navigation and hydraulics for effortlessly operating all systems.

Although the first of these new designs has not yet been launched, computer velocity prediction programs are now sufficiently advanced to give an accurate estimate of the sailing capability. The design studio has forecast that the 80 will achieve exceptional performance (by cruising yacht standards). Upwind she should achieve 5 knots boat speed with a mere 4 knot zephyr and 9 knots boat speed in 13 knot true wind speed, sailing at 20 - 25 degrees apparent wind angle. Reaching speeds of around 9 knots are expected to be easily achieved in any wind above 6 knots. With 12 knots true wind speed the yacht should attain 11 knots.

As with the smaller yachts, the emphasis however is upon effortlessly achieving good daily runs when on passage and making it possible for 2 - 3 crew to safely and easily handle the yacht. The Mystic 80 will be available with a lifting bulb keel to reduce the base line draft to only 2.4 metres (7 9"). With this size of yacht, the perennial problem of what to do with the dinghy can be solved by having an opening transom garage without excessive loss of internal accommodation. The general arrangement drawing illustrates a clever method of docking and then swivelling the RIB dinghy, which also incorporates a bathing/boarding platform.
